Digital Film

March 1, 2009 | Filed Under photography

I’ve always loved the look of film. I think it’s a photographer thing. I don’t know anyone else in my family that has this conundrum: which do you really prefer? shooting film or shooting digital photos?

I think I’d really love to shoot film all day, but digital is so special in its own way, i.e., instant.

I’ve been trying to get the ‘look’ of film with digital pictures for a long time. I can’t say that I’ve been very successful, but I thought I’d record my attempts. Here’s the latest. These were worked on in the digital darkroom, which other people call photoshop.

Below are the digital files of these same photos. The photos below are right out of the camera and are not touched in photoshop.

So, what’s your take? Would you rather shoot film or, if you’re not a photographer, would you rather have photos done with film or digital?

Are you saying that I can have my cake and eat it too?

    good stuff here!

it’s a fine line. cause i think even film can benefit from a little photoshopping. and i feel like sometimes (often) photographers can go overboard w/ photoshop. i guess i think it’s something you have to educate your eye to see like – cause it’s kind of disappearing (true film). and in some ways – nothing can beat true film and in some ways digi has it beat by far.

but my wise friend bonnie berry once said – if you want the look of old metal type backlit, don’t go into photoshop and make it – go out, find old metal type and backlight it and shoot it.

same for a real polaroid look. or holga.

and those that are looking and can really SEE will appreciate and crave the look you’re going for – and will gravitate towards it -

But on the other hand – i love photoshopping my stuff to look all warm and filmy and grainy.
